Marketing your Health Nutrition website with quality backlinks

Use SEO tips to get you started

If you think quality, keyword-rich content is enough to rank high with search engines, think again. Backlinks are now a necessity, and if you don’t have them, you run the risk of being invisible to web crawlers.

In case you don’t know, backlinks are the active text links that lead web users from one page to another when they are clicked. Web crawlers search for backlinks on the premise that a large number of backlinks—especially those from other highly ranked sites—validate you as a legitimate website.

For small health and wellness businesses and ecommerce sites, generating quality backlinks can be a challenge. Unlike blogs or content-rich websites, sites focused on selling are less likely to be shared, and therefore backlinked. But quality backlinks are the only ones worth having, so rather than take shortcuts, it’s important to know the ins and outs.

I recently read a straightforward guide to creating quality backlinks written by Kristin Trapp. I have referenced a few of her tips below with additional things to keep in mind for your health and wellness site website. Here they are:

1. Backlinks should be within the content of a page.

The goal is to create a backlink within the content of the source page and not in a sidebar. A great way to do this is to invite a blogger to review a particular item that you sell or to review your entire selection. Remember, the ranking of the source website matters, so be sure you are soliciting reviews from legitimate bloggers or online magazines that have high ranking and expertise in the same health and wellness category as your brand.

2. The first instance of a backlink to an URL on a page is the only one that matters.

Less is more. Your backlink only needs to appear in the source content once to matter, and will actually look like spam if it appears many more often. Make sure your backlink is rich with category keywords that carve out a niche in the health and wellness space, and one link per source website will be more than enough.

3. Links from relevant sites provide a lot of value.

This may seem obvious, but often companies become so focused on creating backlinks that they forget relevance. If your health and wellness website has an incidental backlink on a page that’s focused on interior design, it won’t do you any favors. On the contrary, if you’re selling nutritional supplements and your backlink appears in an article about running marathons, you’ve just improved your ranking.
